Verizon and US rivals

All 5G mobile network providers claim that start of 5G will be in 2020. Verizon has different plans. The intention is to deploy commercial 5G in 2017. Other 5G US network providers like : AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile waiting not so eager to start ealier with commercial deployment.

Samsung plans 5G deployment in US


Samsung informed about relation with T-Mobile US.
TMO ( T-Mobile US ) is the one of the biggest wireless network provider in US.
5G on 28GHz band should be ready in next year. Samsung also is in cooperation with Verizon and AT& Samsung showed on 5G network on 28GHz 5G band.

Korean Ministry of Science claimed : “The 5G technology being developed by the AWRI is highly likely to become such a leading international standard that the Korean government will apply the technology to a 5G telecommunication network that will be tentatively operated beginning in 2018.”

President Jean-Claude Juncker about 5G

European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said  hat the EU's executive arm aims to have 5G technology deployed by 2025, saying that it could create 2 million jobs in Europe


Juncker said "businesses should be able to plan their investments in Europe for the next 20 years."

3GPP Plans Early Mobile 5G Spec for December 2017

An initial version of the 5G specification  could be agreed till the end of 2017 .

NSA-NR - Non-Standalone-New Radio


The 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) 's NSA-NR (Non-Standalone-New Radio) specification is now due to be prepared  in December 2017. 

"NSA-NR is intended for mobile devices,"  said Durga Malladi from Qualcomm

• The 3GPP expects to prepare Phase I of the New Radio spec in June 2018 with 3GPP Release 15.

TOP5 - For what we are waiting in 5G

1. Throughputs 

There where plenty of demonstration in different summits and demo trials in US , Japan , around the Europe . All of the demonstrations of different mobile vendors not exceeded 10-20Gbit/s . What about higher data rate values ? Is there any plans ? visions ? Still is open question . It's hard to find any route map.

2. UE 

The closest vendors to provide UEs are Intel , Qualcomm , Samsung .
Qualcomm is working  to develop chipsets for the 5G mobile.
Intel was  committed to 5G and IoT, 
5G trials with Intel presence will start in 2018, and plans commercial deployment by 2020.

3. Core 

Common cloud infrastructure will contain : Compute , storage , networking. 
Virtual segmentation for different resourses like transport , access , service. Shared infrastructure of access , transport , cloud.
Focus of more shared resources , more flexible allocation of data and resources.

4. Deployments

In 2017 are planned first pre-comercial deployments.


5. Devices working with 5G technology

Intel - Ericsson .They work in collaboration to create a whole range of new features, like VR and AR content, UHD video. In Intel Developer Forum in San Francisco was presentation of  latest efforts and also  new compute module :  Joule  for purpose to use it by Intel customers in aircraft, monitoring pedestrians and other . Joule doesn't have 5G capabilities yet , but I hope in next release , version will be "more 5G" . For sure it's a great backgound for 5G ready device.

There is opinion that 5G will require lot of base stations . Much more than LTE . 
Hi dense of base stations is because of requirement of hi throughput and peak data rate for each mobile receiver . 

Expectations are that 5G will at least deliver speeds up to 10 times faster than what is offered by  LTE networks . Please don't forget that 5G network should be capable to handle mean millions of new cell phone towers and sensors.

• Samsung showed 5G demo with throughput 7.5 Gbps and got a stable 1.2-Gbps signal speed to a track running through highway .

• Ericsson claimed it had achieved 5 Gbps on a testbed for 5G

Nokia concept of 4.9G

Nokia on Thursday informed  about concept of 4.9G.

Evolution of 4.5G, 4.5G Pro and 4.9G is a way of smoth evolution in 5G direction.
