Qualcomm - 4G/5G Summit - LTE and 5G new information

  •  Australian mobile network provider Telstra which is cooperate  with Ericsson, Qualcomm, and Netgear, has announced  commercial 1Gbps LTE network.

  • Operator Telstra is planning to perform testing of the world's first 1Gbps network before commercial release of the network. It should be done in the next months.

Mike Wright - Telstra group managing director of Networks said :

We pride ourselves on our connectivity expertise, and we continue that tradition today by completing the first commercialisation of a gigabit-class LTE network and device,"

"With the world's first gigabit-class LTE network, we have substantially improved our network capacity and increased real-world LTE download speeds, while also gaining a distinct advantage over competitors as we can now offer an entirely new class of LTE service."

  • Qualcomm described own mobile router and 5G modem chipset idea.

Telstra's network should be able to provide 1Gbps throughput with Netgear Mobile Router MR1100m which uses the Qualcomm Snapdragon X16 LTE modem.

The Netgear Mobile Router MR1100m :

  • download speeds up to 1Gbps over LTE
  • It performs 1Gb/s throughput over 3x carrier aggregation
  • 4x4 Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) on two aggregated carriers
  • + 2x2 MIMO on a third carrier
  • Modulation 256 Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM).

Telia starts 5G in Tallin and Stockholm in 2018 !

Swedish mobile operator Telia (formerly TeliaSonera) says it will deliver 5G services to the cities of Stockholm and Tallinn in 2018.

Results

Telia - operator from Sweden has announced that it will deliver 5G network to Stockholm and Tallinn in 2018.
Output of Telia and Ericsson 5G outdoor trial looks quite good :

  • 15 Gb/s throughput
  • latency of less than 3 seconds

  • trannsmission performed on : 15 GHz band and used 800 MHz of spectrum

Current trial was performed with pre-standardized 5G equipment.

Content and whole setup of 5G is  not yet fully defined.

assumptions are  :

multi-gigabit data speed
massive MIMO
simultaneous use of licensed and unlicensed spectrum

on the other hand LTE ADVANCED PRO solution is now ready and this technology is using and providing above features.

Approved by  3GPP in October 2015 and added in Release 13 new enhancements to LTE standard which are threated as  LTE Advanced Pro features :

  • small cell
  • dual-connectivity architecture
  • carrier aggregation

Combining forces to push 5G specification to be ealier

Combining forces to push 5G specification to be ealier

The key issue is to speed up creation of 5G specification . It's the intention of the biggest wireless network providers.

According to 3GPP schedule :
5G will be standardized in two phases:

  • Release 15 in June 2018,
  • Release 16 in September 2019

Plans of  wireless network providers :

In  late 2017 or 2018 deploymenenf of 5G in US .Verizon Communications has announced plans related to  commercial fixed 5G deployments.

In South Korean for Winter Olympics in 2018 Korea Telecom plans to showcase of advanced 5G. It's two to three years before 3GPP standardization.

Acceleration of specification of 5G

Willingnes to accelerate the 3GPP pace for 5G has been so acute that Korea Telecom and Verizon created multi-company forums to create pre-standard specifications in 2015.

Was  announcement at Mobile World Congress in February, 2016 about the launch of a 5G Trial Specification Alliance (5G TSA).

5G TSA consisting of KT, SK Telecom, NTT DoCoMo  and Verizon. The goal is to speed up 5G specification , especally at the begining accelerate L1/L2 specifications to December, 2017 (from June, 2018).

5G Verizon Communications (VZ) deployment in 2017 !

Verizon deeply involved in developing 5G.

In the telecom market “5G” is the new area. Intention is to provide 10x–100x faster speed than 4G.

5G technology implementation is still before official specification of 3GPP
and stage is now in early stage, Verizon Communications (VZ) is deeply involved in developing 5G.

statement of Verizon

On 23.09.2016 in FierceWireless report,
Fran Shammo spoke at a Goldman Sachs conference.
“5G fixed wireless would be a competitor to cable, or any broadband connection for that matter. But look, I think it’s way too premature to get into the marketing capability of 5G.

Verizon Communications’ (VZ) CFO, Fran Shammo, claimed that the company will start testing 5G service commercially in 2017.

According to the FierceWireless report, he further said :

If you look at 5G, we’re at the beginning stages. We’re much further ahead than some others – and I know others talk about 2019 and 2020,
and we can have a discussion why they’re saying that – it’s because they don’t have any spectrum we do.”
